THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF
DOROTHEA LANGE

16 April - 7 June

Dorothea Lange, A Sign of the Times-
Depression - Mended Stockings, 1934

Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) is widely recognised as one of the most eloquent and influential photographers in American history. Best known for her powerful images of the depression era, Dorothea Lange was also known for embracing the everyday through photography.

Lange's photographs reveal truths that encompass the soul of society. To casual viewers, the formal complexity and emotional range of Lange's vision are masked by the apparent simplicity of her photographs - their directness and clarity. In truth, Lange applied the tools of a dispassionate, documentary approach to forge a deeply personal artistic vision. This union of objective and subjective concerns was never reduced to a formula. Instead, it reflected the dynamic relationship in Lange's work between fact and feeling, observation and engagement.

This exhibition depicts important works from every phase of her career, from rare vintage examples of her most famous photographs to images that are far less familiar.

The selection of 85 prints confirm Lange's historical stature while expanding our understanding of her subtle, incisive vision.

An Exhibition from the Hallmark Photographic Collection, Hallmark Cards, Inc.,USA. Sponsored by Hallmark Cards-Austalia. Australian tour co-ordinated by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
